Everyone is aware of art. Whether you create it or view it, art is always around us. But what exactly is it? Art is the application of creativity through a visual form. It has many benefits, such as:

  • Relieves stress
  • Boosts self esteem
  • Encourages creative thinking
  • Allows you to feel a sense of accomplishment

In this video an artist educator presents the benefits of art to children's minds, bodies and emotions.

How Art Benefits Children

Types of art:

There are many different types of art including:

  • Drawings
  • Paintings
  • Photography
  • Performing arts, such as drama and dance
  • Sculpting
  • Filmmaking
  • Animation
  • New Media

Whatever your art interest is, you should be able to find an art style to suit you.

Why do people create art?

People enjoy art as it allows them to escape from reality and express themselves through an enjoyable, creative way.

For some, it can be hard to communicate how they are feeling and art allows them to communicate the way they feel in a visual form, such as videos or film making.

Take action: In the Kingfisher gallery you can view artworks made by survivors of child sexual exploitation.

Where can I learn art:

Most children learn art at school. But this is not the only way.

  • In addition to curriculum lessons, some schools offer extra after school clubs such as photography and painting.
  • There are also some online courses available which tutor in fields such as photography  and graphic design.
  • As well as this, some companies  (such as Stagecoach) can offer tutoring in dance and drama.

Take action: Visit Activities Oxfordshire to see all the art activities available.

What do can I do if these options are too expensive?

There are many online tutorials covering help for varies of art types, such as dance tutorials, drawing tutorials and painting tutorials.

Local art galleries to visit:

Crucial: Although you need to pay to see some exhibitions, lots are free - for example the galleries at Modern Art Oxford and the Ashmolean Museum. Most also offer discounts for students and young people.

How to Draw a Crab

My experience of art: Since I was young, I have always enjoyed photography, I enjoy taking photos of landscapes and views, especially when I am travelling. In 2016, I was lucky enough to visit New York City, and I was keen to take as many photographs as I could, and that is exactly what I did. The thing I enjoy most about photography is choosing what to photograph, and choosing the right composition to create the best possible photos. As well as this, I like the fact that photographs allow me to look back at memories and be able to feel as if I was still taking the photographs. - Rachel, 18
