Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can be a simple but effective way to support mental wellbeing.
As spring approaches, it offers a fresh opportunity to get outside - from switching to active travel and meeting friends outdoors, to trying a new activity in the open air.

Active travel

Active travel is a great way to build exercise into your day and support your wellbeing. This includes activities such as walking, jogging or cycling. As the days get brighter, it can be a great opportunity to switch to active travel for all or part of your journey.

If active travel isn’t an option for getting to your place of learning or workplace, you could still explore ways to include it as part of your commute, such as walking or cycling for a section of the journey.

Good to know: Your place of learning or workplace may also offer schemes to encourage active travel or physical activity. Taking advantage of these can be a great way to build and maintain healthy exercise habits.

Spring safety

As the weather gets brighter, it can be tempting to dress more lightly, but it’s still important to be prepared for colder or wetter conditions. With darker evenings, wearing warm clothing and something visible can help keep you safe.

If you’re heading out with friends or travelling to events or activities, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and share your plans with a trusted adult, including how you’ll get there and when you’ll be back.

Supporting your wellbeing

This time of year can be busy for many young people. From exams to thinking about next steps, and spending school holidays right. But taking time out to check in with yourself can really help.

It can also be helpful to:

  • Spend time outdoors and keep active
  • Stay connected with others
  • Make sure you get enough rest
