Get an apprenticeship
Apprenticeships are paid jobs for people aged 16+ that combine work, study and training. You'll earn a wage while gaining recognised qualifications, with dedicated time during working hours to complete your training.
They are available at different levels, ranging from Level 2 to Level 7, and can take anywhere from 8 months to 5 years to complete, depending on the qualification level.
Good to know: Apprentices receive at least a guaranteed minimum wage, which will rise after your first year and on completion of your apprenticeship.
Who can get an apprenticeship?
Apprentices must be aged 16+. You can apply earlier as long as you will be 16 by the time the apprenticeship starts.
Most young people start at Level 3, which is equivalent to A-Levels, though many people choose to complete their post-16 education before starting their apprenticeship.
Finding apprenticeships
There are lots of ways to find apprenticeships, and it's worth trying them all:
- Search for Oxfordshire-based opportunities here on Oxme
- Contact local FE colleges - many have dedicated apprenticeship portals like Abingdon and Witney and Activate Apprenticeships and Bucks College Group
- Sign up to the National Apprenticeship Finder to search current apprenticeship vacancies across England
Good to know: Not all apprenticeship opportunities are advertised straight away. If there's a company or organisation you'd like to work for, consider contacting them directly to ask whether they offer apprenticeships, work experience, or other opportunities. Find out more on Gov.UK.
Applying for opportunities
Most job applications are completed online. You'll usually need a CV and cover letter but always check the application requirements carefully.
It’s also a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to apply and ask someone to look over your application before you submit it.
If you don't have internet access at home, you can use computers for free at your local library.
Support to apply for opportunities
Sometimes it can take time to get your perfect apprenticeship.
If you are making applications and not getting interviews, struggling to find opportunities, or need help to make applications, support is available from:
- The Careers Lead at your place of learning
- Your local Job Centre Plus
If you are aged 16-18 (up to 24 with an EHCP or care experience), living in Oxfordshire and not in education, employment or training, the Education, Employment and Training Service can support you.
Extra support is also available if you have a learning difficulty or disability or are care experienced. Ask your employer or learning provider for more information on the help available.
Good to know: If you are unsuccessful or need support, you can contact the Apprenticeship Helpline.
Turning your job into an apprenticeship
If you're under 18 and in work, it's a good idea to complete training that leads to a recognised qualification, as learning is free for under-18s.
If your employer doesn't currently offer apprenticeships, support is available to help them get started. They can contact Enterprise Oxfordshire Skills, local Further Education Colleges or The National Apprenticeships Service for advice.
My Experience: "My aim has always been to work with animals. So when the opportunity to become a trainee dog groomer came along, I grabbed it with both hands. Judy has provided the practical skills training, and Haddon Training has delivered the theory training and assessment for the Advanced National Apprenticeship at Level 3, and doing the apprenticeship has helped me achieve my City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Dog Grooming really quickly.” - Lindsey
